Responsibility | Hutchinson
We make it possible

Corporate citizenship is a core Hutchinson value. So our innovative products are also designed to help our customers protect the environment. As a responsible employer, our Group also ensures that it meets its social commitments. Hutchinson aims to enable more sustainable mobility and a better future through a number of initiatives, as the examples below illustrate.

Our environmental responsibility

Step 1: Materials design

Two Hutchinson proprietary materials, Vegaprene® and Gygaprene®, encourage the use of biobased raw materials. This focus on renewables includes biobased polymer matrixes and biobased fillers — lignocellulosic fillers, for example, are derived from plants and wood.

Our automotive and aerospace activities consider that weight reduction and integrating functions are central to eco-designed Hutchinson technologies and solutions.

We’re also helping to encourage the wider use of recyclable materials with our 100% recyclable Vegaprene® and Gygaprene® TPE and TP materials. Our "house" TPE/TP Vegaprene® and Gygaprene® lines replace less recyclable materials in many automotive and aerospace applications.

Step 2: Manufacturing process

Hutchinson reduces waste from the manufacturing process through regrinding, which reuses virgin raw materials recovered from the process. In fact, some manufacturing customers insist on this. We recycle all materials possible.

Another key priority is reducing emissions of CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Our teams are permanently engaged in shrinking the environmental footprint of our production processes, for instance by scaling back the use of chlorine-based solvents. In addition, treatment units at our manufacturing sites capture and destroy VOCs.

We are recycling more and more production waste at our sites. For instance, Hutchinson has made reusing vulcanized and natural rubber a particular priority. Specialized companies recycle rubber for applications such as floor coverings or use it as a substitute fuel in cement plants.

Step 3: implementation of Solutions

Hutchinson technologies help reduce the environmental impact of the automotive and aerospace sectors. For example, Linkeo® hoses, used in vehicle exhaust systems, can limit hydrocarbon emissions, while selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology significantly reduces NOx emissions.

Our teams are also working with suppliers to manage the full carbon footprint of our products and systems, conducting life cycle analyses (LCA) and performing appropriate controls through to end-of-life disposal.

Our social responsibility

Nothing is more important than the safety of our employees and visitors to our sites, and we are committed to preventing and managing risks. Hutchinson has a Health, Safety & Environment policy focused on reducing risks and continuously improving our safety systems.

As employees of a responsible corporate citizen, Hutchinson teams at its sites throughout the world are actively engaged in giving back to host communities.

In Madrid, Spain, Hutchinson works with a center for people with disabilities to identifying hiring opportunities in production and administrative positions.

In Monte Alto, Brazil, Hutchinson supports a reforestation project to plant 27,000 trees, promoting carbon capture and preventing soil erosion that threatens homes.
